YOU ARE AT: Inglés/ Leisure/ Mollarri

The recent reconstruction of the old Mollarri mineral loading bay offers an interesting journey through Zarautz’s industrial past and allows you to enjoy surprising views of the open sea and of Getaria.

The town we now link to surfing or Txakoli wine actually had an industrial past which few have heard about. In 1906, the Mollarri loading bay was built, where all the minerals extracted from the Asteasu mines ended up. Over a journey of 11 kilometres, the iron was transported in dump cars which travelled via an aerial cable supported on 112 posts. The loading bay closed in 1923 due, among other reasons, to the bad docking conditions.

The town has now recovered this heritage and has opened it up to the public. Besides spectacular views and a pleasant walk to the loading bay, which can be accessed via the Iñurritza estuary (eastern end of the beach), or from Gran Camping Zarautz campsite, this historical treasure of Zarautz includes an interpretation centre with interesting activities and exhibitions. (Centre temporarily closed!)
